How to Prepare for Your First Day of Work

Congratulations, you got the job!  Take a deep breath and pat yourself on the back.  Now that you’ve landed your desired position at a company in Rochester or Buffalo through an agency like Career Start, it’s time to get prepared.  Making sure everything is in order for your first day is critical to feeling organized and equipped ahead of time.  There are a few things that you should definitely make sure are taken care of before you walk through those doors initially.

Prepping for your new career can be a fun process, if you make it one.  It doesn’t have to be a boring checklist that’s typical to go through when starting something new, so feel free to make it your own.  You are creating your own space within the company you work for now, and it’s important to define just exactly how you’ll make your first impression. This is how to prepare for your first day.

DO: Come Prepared

This one might seem a bit obvious, but you’d be surprised at how often this gets ignored in one way or another. Depending on your job description, this could mean a couple of different things. For most fields of work, it’s good to bring a notebook and pen/pencil in on the first day. You’ll want to take notes on different things you need to remember for your new role. Plus, this looks good to your employer as well.

DO: Dress the Part

During your interview, you might have noticed what people were wearing in the office.  Try to mimic that sense of style somewhat at first.  Playing it safe is always your best bet, but don’t be afraid to let your own personal fashion sense shine through.  Depending on the field of work you’re in, this may differ a bit. If you work in a more corporate environment or the medical field, you’ll have less lee-way.  Regardless, make sure that you know what to wear!  If you’re not sure, feel free to ask your supervisor what the dress code guidelines are for your office.

DON'T: Stress Yourself Out

It’s normal to be a little nervous at first, but don’t let it control your whole demeanor.  Be confident in yourself and your abilities.  After all, they had enough faith in your qualifications to hire you, so take pride in that.  Your attitude is everything, and it dictates your relationships professionally and otherwise.

DON'T: Be Late!!! Seriously

First impressions are everything, so being late on your first day is definitely not a good look.  It’s unprofessional, and sends the wrong message to your supervisor and co-workers.  Even if a giant monster with three heads was blocking your way on the expressway, it’s still not an excuse to be late on your first day.  To prevent this from happening, aim to be early.  Wake up earlier than you normally would, and plan your commute ahead of time.  It’s always better to be early rather than late.  You’ll get in a steady routine once you’ve been on the job for a while.
